What are Sealants?

Sealants are ideal for patients who are looking for a way to further protect their teeth. These clear protective coatings cover the chewing surfaces of the back teeth where tooth decay is more common. If you have deep ridges and grooves on your back teeth, sealants are a great way to prevent cavities and the need for further dental treatment. Most sealants can last for anywhere from one to three years depending on the amount of wear they receive.

What happens during the Sealant process?

Dental Sealants in Brentwood, CA

The procedure begins by cleaning and drying the back teeth. We then apply a liquid sealant using a small brush. The sealant is applied to just the chewing surfaces of the posterior teeth. Once applied, the sealants are cured into place using a bright light. This process may be repeated several times until the back teeth are fully covered and protected. You can and should brush your teeth normally even after the sealants have been placed. We can determine if your sealants are still in place or need to be reapplied when you come in for your checkup visits.

If you think you might need or would benefit from sealants, call us today to schedule an appointment to come in for a consultation.

Why would Sealants be needed?

You might need or want sealants because you’re susceptible to decay and already have a lot of fillings in your mouth. You or your children may not have the best brushing and flossing techniques, so you’re looking for a way to further protect your smile. Sealants are ideal for people of all ages, and there is no age limit on who can benefit from them. Because they are completely clear, no one will even know that they’re on your teeth but the dental team.

Who is a candidate for Sealants?

Most patients who want to protect their teeth are good candidates for sealants. Sealants are most often applied to pediatric teeth, but they can be just as advantageous for our adult patients. These sealants can last for up to three years, and we’ll check on them at each of your bi-annual visits to ensure they’re still in place. Having sealants placed is not an excuse to forgo regular brushing, flossing or dental visits.
