What is Teeth Whitening?

Teeth whitening is a great way to remove stains and deep discoloration from your teeth. Teeth can naturally discolor over time, and certain foods, drinks and lifestyle habits can cause your smile to stain even more. We offer both in-office as well as take-home whitening options to fit your individual needs. Whitening can safely be done about once every 12 months as a way to maintain a healthy, beautiful smile.

Dr. Patel offers two types of whitening systems at his office: KöR Whitening and Boost In office whitening. He uses the KöR system as more of a take home whitening service and the Boost is more of an in office service.

What happens during the Teeth Whitening process?

For our in-office whitening, you will come in and sit comfortably in one of our exam rooms. We then work to apply a whitening gel to your teeth and place a light over your smile. In just 60 minutes, your teeth are multiple shades brighter and treatment is finished. You can maintain your results at home by using whitening toothpastes and mouthwashes and avoiding staining foods, drinks and activities. For our take-home whitening option, we’ll use impressions to create trays that are fitted just for you.

We then provide you with a whitening gel that is used inside of these trays for a specific amount of time at home. In some cases, we’ll instruct you to wear the trays overnight for best results.

Why is Teeth Whitening needed?

You might be feeling badly about your appearance and avoid smiling because of the color of your teeth. Likewise, you might be planning a big event, like a class or family reunion, and you want to look your absolute best. Some of the different things that can cause your teeth to become stained include:

  • Smoking
  • Chewing tobacco
  • Drinking coffee, tea or cola
  • Certain medications
  • Improper oral hygiene
  • Staining foods (berries, chocolate)
  • Natural aging

Who is a candidate for Teeth Whitening?

Even the very best whitening treatment available will have no effect on the look of restorations. If you have veneers, fillings, crowns or bonding, it is important that you know that whitening will not lighten these areas. Whitening is best for healthy natural adult teeth that are stained or discolored. Over-whitening can be problematic to your dental health, so we will conduct an exam prior to recommending any treatment.
