What are Root Canals?

A root canal is a procedure that involves fully removing the inner pulp of a tooth. When this pulp becomes infected by decay or exposed through a crack or break, it can cause severe pain and sensitivity. The pulp is responsible for housing all of the blood supply and nerves that are necessary for keeping the tooth vital. Root canals are one of the most common procedures performed in the dental field.

Root Canals in Brentwood, CA

The root canal process will begin by numbing the area that is to receive treatment. Once the area is numbed with a local anesthetic, we will place a dental dam to isolate the tooth. The decay is removed from the tooth and the inner pulp taken out using special instruments. The canals of the roots are scraped clean and filled with a specialty medicated material known as gutta-percha. This material helps to prevent infection and fills the void within the canals of the roots. The tooth is then filled with composite resin and the dental dam removed.

Why are Root canals needed?

Most patients will need a root canal because they ignored a cavity for too long. Over time, the decay reached the inner pulp, causing it to become infected. Another reason for requiring a root canal is because your tooth has broken, cracked or fractured enough to expose this inner pulp. In either case, it’s important to have the pulp removed via a root canal.

Who is a candidate for Root Canals?

To determine if you may need a root canal, we will examine your teeth. X-rays allow us to identify inner decay of a tooth as well as exposure of a pulp through a crack or break. If you need to have a root canal done, it is important to sit for the procedure as soon as possible to prevent further damage to the tooth. We typically recommend having a root canaled tooth crowned after the procedure because it’s more susceptible to cracking and breaking.
